These soft slab dishes were created as part of a collaborative fundraising project to benefit BEA's NHS Holiday Families project. Mrs. Cox's 8th graders rolled textured vinyl mats onto clay slabs, formed the slabs around wooden forms, and then finished the rims and glazed the trays to accent the texture once they were bisque fired. The trays are created with low-fire clay and glazes. In addition to use as soap dishes, they can be catch-all’s for spare change/jewelry/office supplies like Post-it's and paperclips or for unpeeled/uncut lemon, garlic, ginger, etc… trays or for wrapped food like candies. Minor “imperfections” are considered a valuable mark of the maker and distinguish handmade items from machined and mass-produced objects.
